I can understand why a mother needs to be in different rooms at the same time keeping an ear on her baby, but… What is the problem with “low volume”? Tiny battery-powered speakers went out with transistor radios. Ever hear of a “Walkman”? Most modern battery powered audio devices do not even have a speaker. That is because you are not going to get decent sound from a battery powered tiny speaker. So why not use the headphone jack?

    Edit:

I bought one and used the headphone jack. Using ordinary Walkman style headphones, there is an extremely loud popping noise every time the unit is turned on. The speaker output is extremely low, and the headphone jack output will not drive the line input to computer speakers either. That is probably not a voltage amplitude problem, it is probably a source current problem. In other words, they could easily make the headphone jack compatible with ordinary headphones, and also so that it could be plugged into any computer speaker set or stereo system. I am still looking for a room monitor that includes a (real) headphone jack. Apparently stuff is not only being made in China these days, apparently stuff is also being designed in China. The next time you have a choice between two items, choose one made in a democracy (if available) even if it costs a few pennies more.

These are terrible. I bought as a second monitor to listen to my boys when they weren’t in their nursery. The reception is AWFUL! As soon as you walk outside and close the door I get no sound. I am taking it back to the store for a refund.

I purchased an Angelcare monitor and it works great!

The first thing I noticed is that this item was made in China. Naturally, I was apprehensive about the material used in manufacturing since products from China have a history of being poisonous. One example being their dog food which killed my Doberman. So, I updated my will and proceeded with assembly. Luckily I have a high powered microscope which enabled me to decode some of the labeling on the units. The instructions say “DO NOT plug AC Adaptor plug into headphone jack on side of the unit”. Thanks to my microscope I found the headphone jack to be on the bottom of the unit, not the side. The jack on the side is actually the AC jack which, contrary to instructions, is where the AC adaptor is plugged.

After charging the batteries for 8 hours I was ready for the test stage. The concept of having two parent (I call them adult) units and a child (I call this the pet) unit is intriguing. First, I tried the adult units and could not hear anything even with the volume at maximum. I put the pet unit in my latest Dobie’s room (he eats USA produced food exclusively). I asked him to bark and could hear a faint sound. Wanting to get more volume from him I went outside and chased a rabbit into his view and, as usual, he went beserk with barking at a volume that could be heard in a neighboring state. The faint sound I previously heard now increased to the level that allowed me to idenify it as possibly a barking sound.

My intended use for this item was to monitor my Dobie during the night. Sometimes he whines at a low volume when he needs to go outside to do his business. If I don’t hear him he holds it in until the morning and when I enter his room his eyes are sad and teary and his rear legs are crossed. I hoped that this unit would eliminate that scene. However, in summary, this item is very lame. If you decide to purchase it you may want to consider adding a pair of high powered bullhorns to your shopping cart so the parents/adults can signal each other.

  4. Yes, I know this is being marketed to folks with babies, but its appeal is much, much bigger. Have a friend who was critically injured in an auto accident and when she came home I was interested in this unit for her since she will be in a hospital bed for weeks or months, and the bedroom is in a different area of the house. This means someone has to check on her every fifteen or so minutes to see if she needs anything. With a unit like this her family and friends who are helping as caregivers will be able to hear her when she asks for help of any kind.

The design is wonderful and it comes with rechargable batteries for the Parent units, with 3 AAA batteries being needed for the Nursery Unit. Low glow night light, easy to clean, ’sound lights’ so you can hear if the baby/person is simply moving and making sounds or is in need of care.

Has a volume control, and a high efficiency power adapter which is eco friendly and ‘green’. Lets you know when you are out of range and wearing the parent unit. Again I recommend this for more than just babies.

I bought it to replace a static, year old Graco monitors. The volume is too low and, if you cranked it up, you hear lots of background noise. And the range is much shorter than our Graco which never had decent range. Our toddler room is at one end of the house and our bedroom is at the other end, about 80 feet separation. The monitor could not receive the signal in our bedroom. So I am returning the product.
